Welcome to the West Village
Perhaps no NYC neighborhood has had more of a direct influence on 20th century pop culture than the West Village. Known as ‘Little Bohemia’ as early as 1916, by 1938 the West Village was home to the country’s first racially integrated nightclub, giving white audience members some of their first exposure to acts such as John Coltrane, Charlie Parker, Miles David, and Billie Holiday. By the 1950s, the area was ground zero for multiple genres of pop culture innovation, from the music of Woodie Guthrie and Jimi Hendrix to the writing of James Baldwin and Jack Kerouac. There are currently around 30,000 New Yorkers residing in the West Village and about 38% are homeowners. 139 homes have sold in the last three months at an average price of $3.349m, and there are currently 136 homes available for sale.
