Kips Bay

Kips Bay is a neighborhood on the east side of Manhattan, roughly bounded by 34th St to the north, the East River to the east, 23rd St to the south, and Third Ave to the west. The neighborhood is named after Dutch settler Jacobus Hendrickson Kip, whose family farmed the area in the 17th century. The bay itself, an East River inlet running from 32nd to 37th streets, played a role in the Revolutionary War when British troops landed there in 1776, forcing American forces to retreat. 

Some of the neighborhood’s most notable destinations include The Asser Levy Recreation Center, a  community hub with a pool, fitness center, and playground, NYU Langone Medical Center, one of the most prominent hospitals in NYC, and Bellevue Hospital Center, the oldest public hospital in the U.S., dating back to 1736. This makes the neighborhood especially popular with medical professionals. 

For those who cherish the outdoors and active living, Kips Bay does not disappoint. The East River Greenway is a scenic haven for joggers, bikers, and anyone looking to enjoy breathtaking views of the river and the city skyline. 

The area is fantastic for restaurants, with some of the most notable being Norma (438 3rd Ave) serving authentic Sicilian dishes like arancini and pasta alla Norma in a cozy atmosphere, Hill and Bay (581 2nd Ave), a great spot for comfort food including delicious burgers and pasta dishes, and Le Parisien (163 E 33rd St), a charming bistro serving duck confit, steak frites, and more.

Transportation in Kips Bay is convenient and accessible. The neighborhood is served by several New York City Subway stations, including the 23rd Street and 28th Street stations at Park Avenue South, both served by the 6 train. Multiple bus routes, such as the M9, M15, M34, and M34A, provide crosstown and uptown/downtown service, connecting residents to various parts of the city. Additionally, the East 34th Street Ferry Landing offers NYC Ferry services, providing a scenic and efficient route to destinations along the East River and Brooklyn shoreline.
