Kips Bay is a neighborhood on the east side of Manhattan, roughly bounded by 34th St to the north, the East River to the east, 23rd St to the south, and Third Ave to the west. The neighborhood is named after Dutch settler Jacobus Hendrickson Kip, whose family farmed the area in the 17th century. The bay itself, an East River inlet running from 32nd to 37th streets, played a role in the Revolutionary War when British troops landed there in 1776, forcing American forces to retreat.
Some of the neighborhood’s most notable destinations include The Asser Levy Recreation Center, a community hub with a pool, fitness center, and playground, NYU Langone Medical Center, one of the most prominent hospitals in NYC, and Bellevue Hospital Center, the oldest public hospital in the U.S., dating back to 1736.
