Political violence like that which Charlie Kirk was a victim of has no place in a free society. Any society where public figures risk getting killed simply for speaking publicly cannot call it itself a free society or a democracy. Kirk had, on multiple occasions, advocated for the very sort of political violence that killed him. He publicly approved of the terrorist attack on Paul Pelosi. He was an enthusiastic supporter of the January 6 terrorist attack on the US capital. He encouraged his followers to threaten violence against specific social justice activists in an effort to silence them. He was an unapologetic racist, misogynist, and bigot. Worse, he was a fascist.
He'll never get the opportunity to apologize for the damage he caused our culture and our democracy or to set about making it right, and that's a tragedy. While he was apparently killed by a fellow rightwing extremist, we've already seen a 'Reichstag Fire'-like effect of blaming progressive movements and the opposition political party, and encouraging both violent retribution against innocent people and a fascist coalescence of power. That's a tragedy.
To mourn the loss of a husband or father is human. To have empathy for a widow or fatherless child is a virtue. But to honor a person whose legacy is fomenting hatred and divineness at the expense of his country, who got rich indoctrinating young people with immoral, anti-Christian, un-American ideas, who made our culture a more dangerous place for marginalized people because that was his goal, is inexcusable, and morally condemnable. May his family work toward peace, and may anyone who knew Kirk learn from the bad example he set.
